Timothy Charles Varney, 69, of Sebring, Florida, lost his 2 year battle with cancer and joined our Lord on January 27, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on Long Island, NY on October 16, 1944, to the late Charles and Dolores Varney. After growing up in Ronkonkoma, NY, Tim joined the United States Army in 1962 serving in the K-9 corps and was an expert marksman until being honorably discharged in 1965. He met Barbara Rigby in 1965 and they were married in 1966. In 1973, their daughter Heather was born. He earned a B.S. degree in Geology from the University of South Florida in 1971. Later he went on to earn his M.S. in Public Health followed by a Ph.D. in Environmental and Occupational Health. Tim was recognized for his excellence in scientific achievements all over the country. Tim was a member of Saint Catherine's Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time outdoors watching wildlife, hiking, spending time with family, and having a good meal. Tim is survived by his wife Barbara Varney of Sebring, Florida; his daughter and son-in-law Heather and Michael Woods; his grandson Griffin Woods; and four siblings; Donna Schorf, Linda Biagini, Paul Varney and Hope Winnie. Services will be held at Saint Catherine's Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 am. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lakeland at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial donations be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 1110 Hammock Rd., Sebring, FL 33870.
