Terry J. Smith Terry J. Smith, of Avon Park, FL passed away Wednesday, November 19th at Tampa General Hospital. Terry was a native of Jacksonville, FL. He traveled the United States and part of Europe as his father was in the Army. They settled in Newport News, VA where he attended Christopher Newport College and he met his future wife, Lorena. After working in the local shipyard and for NASA, Terry applied to and was accepted into the Physician's Assistant Program at Duke University. Upon graduating, Terry and his family made their way to FL and settled in Avon Park in the summer of 1978. This is where Terry met and went to work with Dr. Donald Geldart. They continued to work together until Terry's passing. He dedicated his life to helping others through his profession and enjoyed teaching/training many individuals new to the medical field. Terry was a a man with a big heart who adored his family and loved to make people smile. He volunteered his time as the first trainer for the Avon Park High School football team. He also performed sports physicals for some of the APHS teams. In addition, he volunteered in the medical building at the 12 hours of Sebring and other racing events. He was a member of SCCA and loved to race his BMW at Sebring and Daytona. Terry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lorena; brother, Mike Smith and wife, Doris; two children, Jeff Smith and wife Penny; Joanne Duffey and husband, Mike; three grandchildren, Amanda Smith-Yeager, Brianna and Kaitlin Duffey; and one great grandchild, Daniel Yeager. A memorial service will be held at Lakeview Memorial Gardens on Saturday, January 24th with the time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Terry Smith Memorial Account, Mid Florida, 930 U.S.Hwy 27 Avon Park, FL 33825.
