Scott Michael Schmitt

Scott Michael Schmitt, 57, passed away on August 31, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with illness.

Scott was the beloved husband of Mary, with whom he would have celebrated 34 years of marriage on October 17. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother.

Scott dedicated 32 years of his life to law enforcement, including 16 years as a K9 officer. His career and his K9 partners were an important part of his life, and he took great pride in serving his community.

A lifelong Michigan resident, Scott spent many years visiting Florida and always looked forward to the day he could make it home in retirement. He dreamed of being close to his mother, enjoying the Florida sunshine, and having plenty of time for one of his favorite pastimes—golf. Scott and Mary had recently made that dream a reality, becoming Florida residents shortly before his passing.

Those who truly knew Scott knew his humor, his kindness, and his ability to make a friend almost anywhere. He loved his family deeply and leaves behind a lifetime of memories for those who loved him.

Scott is survived by his wife, Mary; his sons, Cody (Michelle) Schmitt and Caleb (Megan) Schmitt; his grandson, LeeLyn; his mother and stepfather, Cathy and Harold Hamming, with whom he shared a very close relationship; his brothers, Brian (Tonya) Schmitt and Craig Schmitt; and his much-loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Mark Schmitt.

Scott’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Bud and Donna Somers Hospice House for the extraordinary care, compassion, kindness, and dignity they provided to Scott and his family during his final days. Their professionalism was exceptional, but it was the genuine compassion and personal care they showed that will never be forgotten. Our family will forever be grateful for the comfort and support they provided during an incredibly difficult time.
