Ruby May Kempf, age 88, resident of Galion, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the Magnolia Terrace Nursing Facility in Galion. She was born on December 14, 1935, in Mansfield, Ohio to John and Martha (Parr) Meyers and was a graduate of Leesville High School. Ruby was employed with the Shelby Mutual Insurance for numerous years, before her retirement. After retirement, Ruby and her husband, Verlin, moved to Avon Park, Florida in 1995, where she resided until her move to Galion in 2019. She was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby and the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Florida. A talented musician, she and her husband Verlin, shared the love of bluegrass music and played in the "Memory Makers" band for many years together. Ruby was also a skilled athlete. She was always part of a bowling league or golf team and on September 6, 1976, Ruby had a Hole in One at Woody Ridge Golf Course in Shelby. She was crafty, and enjoyed crocheting, working on various crafting projects or jigsaw puzzles.
She is survived by her son Ben (April) Kempf of Crestline; three step-children, Verlinda (Gerry Strack) of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mel Kempf of Lexington, Tom (Crystal) Kempf of Shelby; 14 grandchildren, numerous great and great great grandchildren; multiple nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Verlin Kempf, whom she wed July 11, 1969; one sister Luella Snyder; two brothers John Meyers, Charles "Chud" Meyers; one half brother Paul "Skip" Gantzler and one step-daughter-in-law Pamela Kempf.
Friends may visit at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. Funeral services will be held immediately follow at 2:00 PM with Father Chris Mileski officiating. Interment will take place on October 25, 2024, at the Lake View Memorial Gardens in Avon Park, Florida. In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shelby HelpLine Ministries at 29 1/2 Walnut St. Shelby, OH 44875.
