Robert Eugene Meyer

September 19, 1929 — February 9, 2024

Robert Eugene Meyer, age 94,  born on September 19, 1929, in Lucas County, Iowa, peacefully passed away on February 9, 2024, in Avon Park, Florida. He was the beloved son of Raymond E. Meyer and Florence Hull, who preceded him in death.

Bob led a remarkable life, leaving behind an undeniable legacy of love, faith, and compassion. He was a devoted husband, father, and brother, and his memory will forever be cherished by those he leaves behind. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Lena Helen (Bybee) Meyer of Sebring, Florida; his son, Richard Meyer (Sheila) of Sebring, Florida; his daughters, Jeannette Ferguson (David) of Ohio and Anita Swedberg (Mark) of Brazil; and his brother, John Meyer of California.

Bob came to faith in Jesus Christ when he was a teenager and felt the call of God to ministry when he was a young man. He moved to Omaha to study radio and then the Scriptures. While there, he met and married Lena Bybee, to whom he was married for 71 years.

The Meyers joined Baptist Mid-Missions in 1953 and arrived in the Dominican Republic in 1955 to begin their missionary service. Bob worked in several different mission churches and was instrumental in starting a church among the middle and upper class, which was used of the Lord to reach many in that often-neglected class of people. He also started and taught in a Bible Institute.

In 1987 he was asked to open the field of Ecuador for Baptist Mid-Missions, so they packed up and moved to Cuenca. During the 11 years they worked there, they were involved in church-planting, Bible institute work, the ARRIBA! program and cutting through government red tape for the mission.

In 1999, they retired to Sebring, Fl, where they joined the Spring Lake Baptist Church. At Spring Lake, he continued serving the Lord with the same faithfulness and diligence he always displayed. In 2023 Bob and Lena moved to Maranatha Manor and joined Maranatha Baptist Church.

Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their final respects at the visitation, which will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church, Sebring, FL, on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 10:00 AM, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial is to be held after the service at Lakeview Memorial Gardens. This will be an opportunity to celebrate Bob’s remarkable life and share precious memories with one another.

Robert Eugene Meyer was a godly man, a visionary, and a leader of men. Only Heaven will reveal the scope of his legacy in souls saved, men and women influenced to walk in paths of righteousness, and young people trained for ministry. And yet he would not want to receive any of the praise; that belongs to God, and God alone. To Him be all glory and honor forever and ever.
