Richard L. (Dick) Barney, a proud POW veteran, devoted family man, and respected member of his community, entered Heaven’s gates on June 16, 2026, at the age of 93. Richard was born in Marion, IN to Marshall P. and Mable (Crist) Barney on July 12, 1932. He was raised by his paternal grandparents Ray and Pearl Barney after his parents divorced. He attended Marion High School and enlisted in the US Army on August 25, 1949, at the age of 17. He was captured by the Chinese Volunteer Army during the Korean War on December 1, 1950, and was held as a prisoner of war until August 25, 1953. Richard lived a life defined by courage, perseverance, faith, and service to others. As a Prisoner of War for 33 1/2 months, he demonstrated extraordinary strength and resilience in the face of adversity. His sacrifices and dedication to his country reflected the character that guided him throughout his life. He was honorably discharged from the US Army on November 18, 1953. Richard furthered his military career by enlisting in the National Guard and was discharged from the Guard on October 30, 1958.Richard married Sara Lee Workman on December 12, 1953 and they were married for 67 years, until Sara’s passing on December 21, 2020. He worked at General Motors for 30 years, at the Marion, IN plant, retiring on December 26, 1986. During his lifetime Richard enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, and dancing. He also operated Barneys Pro Shop in the Plaza Bowling Alley after retirement. In 2001 Richard and Sara relocated to Sebring, FL where they spent many years truly enjoying their retirement, dancing, spending time with one another, as well as with many special friends they connected with in Sebring. You could often catch him having breakfast at his favorite spot, Oscar’s Restaurant, where he and his friends and son Mike would enjoy each other’s company, coffee, and a good breakfast each morning together! He cherished every moment with his family and friends. Those who knew him will remember his unwavering determination, strong values, unique sense of humor, and deep love for his country and those around him. Richard was greatly honored to receive the Hometown Hero Award from the Champion For Children Foundation at their September 25, 2025 Gala. Richard is survived by his son Michael L. Barney (Patricia), grandchildren Beth Jones (David), Kristen L. Barney, Lucas Moore, and Brad Moore, great-grandchildren Jaydin Bell (Leilanu), Mary K. Bell-Jones, Teagan J. Moore, special friend Nancy Fassler and his stepbrother David Wayman. He was preceded in death by his wife Sara; daughter; Kathy J. (Barney) Stoner; brother; Marshall “Jr” P. Barney and sister Patsy Jones. His legacy of service, courage, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him. While he will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing that his life was one of purpose, honor, and lasting impact. Special thanks to the doctors and staff at Advent Hospital, Compassionate Care Hospice and Dr. Audwin Nelson and staff for their care of our loved one. A memorial service will be held at St. John Methodist Church, 33631 Grand Prix Drive, Sebring, FL on Saturday June 27, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Richard’s ashes will be buried alongside his wife Sara, at the VA Marion National Cemetery in Marion, IN. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John Methodist Church in Sebring, FL, Champions for Children Foundation in Sebring, FL, Military Sea Services Museum in Sebring, FL and The Training Center in Marion, IN.
“A hero is someone who has given his life to something bigger than himself.” Richard (Dick) Barney embodied that spirit every day, and his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who cared and loved him.
