Philip J. Tormay, aka "Pumper Phil" from Avon Park, Florida was born on May 28, 1942 to Philip and Irene Tormay in New Britain, Connecticut. His parents died when he was very young and he and his sister became foster children to Robert and Alice Martin and stayed with them until they reached adulthood. Philip graduated from Newington High School in 1960 and moved to Hialeah, Florida two years after graduating prior to joining the Air Force. While in the service, he was stationed at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, Louisiana and spent six months in Aviano, Italy. He spent his last year in the service in Cam Ron Bay, Vietnam. Upon discharge, he started moving wide loads all over the country and did that for fifteen years until starting his own concrete pumping business in 1978. He met his wife Mary in Hialeah, Florida in 1969. They married in 1972 and then moved his family to Avon Park, Florida. The couple along with Philip's stepchildren, Terrie, Rejane, Michael and David, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in April of 2012. Philip was a small cattle rancher and was a former member of the Cattleman's Association and the Elks Club and was a current member of the Moose Club until the time of his demise. Philip was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2012 and worked right up until the end. His short battle with cancer ended on July 7, 2012. Philip leaves behind his wife Mary, four children, Terrie, Rejane, Michael and David, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
