Mildred Mosby

December 8, 1930—January 2, 2020

Born on Monday, December 8, 1930 in Chicago Illinois, Mildred (Millie) Mosby was the only daughter of Oscar Mosby and Anna Bjornestad.  Both of her parents had immigrated independently from Norway and met in the Chicago area.  Millie had one sibling, George, an older brother who predeceased her.

As a child, Millie experienced quite a bit of childhood illness, resulting in frequent medical visits and trips to the hospital.  As a result, she developed a strong desire to be a doctor.  Another important experience from Millie’s childhood was summers spent at a small cottage in Wisconsin, where many other Norwegian families also had cottages.  One mother would organize daily times of reading the Bible, singing and praying.  It was during one of these times that Millie gave her life to God and became a Christian.

As Millie grew, God began to put a burden on her heart for overseas missions. By the age of 17, she had decided to pursue medical missions.  She attended Bryan College for two years, and then transferred to Wheaton earning a degree in Zoology in 1953.  Millie continued her education at the University of Illinois at Urbana, earning a Master’s degree in Zoology with an emphasis in parasitology.  She thought this would be helpful for serving in a hospital in Africa.

In 1957, Millie applied to SIM and was accepted for missionary service at Titcombe College in Nigeria, teaching English and History.  Millie almost refused the assignment, she was not a teacher, especially in English and History!  However, she did go and spent most of the next 22 years teaching.  Millie came to love studying and teaching, especially courses in biology and zoology.

In the early 80s, Millie returned to Chicago to care for her aging mother.  This led to a new ministry with international students in the Chicago area. For the next twelve years, Millie invested in the lives of these students, meeting them at the airport, helping them with shopping, leading Bible studies and helping with English.  Millie found this to be a very rewarding ministry.

Millie officially retired in 1993, however she remained active in her local church and continued with two or three Bible studies.  In 2006, she relocated to the SIM Retirement Village in Sebring, Florida, and helped care for her good friend and colleague from Nigeria, Rowena Marion.

On Thursday, January 2, 2020 Millie Mosby, 89, peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior.  Memorial gifts can be made to SIM USA – Sebring.
