A Lesson in Kindness I’ll Never Forget

Merew,

I remember that night in Wondogenet years ago—you, me, and little Markos laughing under the stars as we walked down to the hot springs. The air was thick with steam and the sound of splashing water. Aster and Bizuye went to the women’s side, while the three of us stayed on the men’s side, surrounded by strangers washing away the day’s weariness.

And then I remember him—the old man. Frail, silent, holding a worn-out cloth, waiting his turn that never seemed to come. One by one, younger men stepped ahead of him, not out of malice, but simply because they didn’t see him. None of us did… until you did.

Without hesitation, you walked over, gently took his arm, and led him to the water. Then, in front of everyone, including wide-eyed Markos and me—you began washing him. You used your soap, and your own hands, as if caring for him was the most natural thing in the world. No speeches, no hesitation, just kindness in its purest form.

That moment has stayed with me all these years. You taught me—no, you showed me—what true respect looks like. Not the kind that’s given to the powerful or the proud, but the kind reserved for those the world often overlooks. You taught me that love isn’t just a feeling; it’s an action, a choice to step forward when others step aside.

Now, as I say goodbye to you, I realize how rare people like you are. You didn’t just preach goodness; you lived it in quiet, unshakable ways. And though my heart aches knowing you’re gone, I find comfort in knowing your lessons live on—in me, in Markos (no longer a little boy, but surely a man shaped by your example), and in everyone else blessed enough to have known you.

Thank you, Merew. For that night. For your heart. For teaching me that the truest measure of a person isn’t what they have, but what they’re willing to give.

May God welcome you with the same warmth you showed others. And may we honor you by living as you did—with eyes open, hands ready, and a heart that refuses to look away.

Forever grateful,
