Maureen Muriel Helms

Maureen Muriel Helms, 88, of Sebring, FL, passed away on December 21, 2024, in Tampa, FL. Born on March 12, 1936, in Montreal, Canada, she was the beloved daughter of the late Maurice and Annabel Legault.

Maureen moved to Sebring in 1973, where she became a cherished member of the community. She owned and operated Lee's Restaurant in downtown Sebring for many years, creating a warm and welcoming space for friends and neighbors. A devout Catholic, Maureen was a dedicated member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, actively participating in the Council of Catholic Women and the Catholic Legion of Mary.

Maureen's life was defined by her mission to serve others. She was selfless, humble, and deeply empathetic, always seeking ways to uplift those around her. Her creativity and artistic spirit shone brightly in her love for cooking, painting, drawing, and arranging flowers. She found joy in nature, especially near the water, and treasured family vacations to the Florida Keys.

A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Maureen’s greatest joy came from her family. She loved hosting tea parties for her grandchildren, sharing her creativity and meticulous attention to detail. Her home was always a reflection of her care and devotion, thoughtfully presented with love.

Maureen is survived by her children: Gary Helms of Sebring, FL; Marie Stephenson (William) of Sebring, FL; Robert Helms (Robin) of Sebring, FL; Elizabeth Altman (Michael) of McAlpine, FL; Heather Payne (Kelly) of Sebring, FL; and William Helms (Gudi) of Sebring, FL. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Legault; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Legault.

Her independent, hardworking nature and loving spirit will forever be remembered by those who knew her. Maureen's legacy of kindness, creativity, and devotion lives on in her family and in the countless lives she touched. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine Catholic Church, Sebring, FL, on Friday January 3, 2025 at 2:00 pm. The Rosery will start prior to the service at 1:30 pm. Family invites friends to join in the visitation on Thursday, January 2, 2025 5:00-7:00 pm at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home Chapel.  The Divine Mercy will take place at the beginning of the visitation.  If donations want to be made in Maureen’s name, the family suggests donations to St. Catherine Catholic School.
