Mary Claire Carter Youmans lived a full life, starting and ending in her beloved hometown of Lake Wales, FL. Born in December 1952 to John and Martha Carter, she loved family, adventures, the beach, making pillowcases, and reading.
After graduating from Lake Wales High in 1970, she attended Judson College, then transferred to Florida State University, earning her first Bachelor’s degree. She loved reading and education and earned another Bachelor’s degree from Warner Southern, followed by a Master’s in Library science from the University of South Florida.
Mary supported her family through their many passions and successes. Her family meant the most to her, she joyfully filled her home for Sunday lunch and holiday dinners. Her daughter Rebecca and her grandson Jaden, brought her the greatest joy. Traveling with Jaden was a highlight each year as she enjoyed the adventures and time with him.
A member of the church from birth, Mary participated in many activities with First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales for many years, serving as a Deacon and in the kitchen for family night dinners.
For the past 15 years, Mary was also very dedicated to Ryan’s Case for Smiles, sewing whimsical pillowcases that gave children an emotional boost which helped with the stress and emotional impact of illness. She cut, sewed, delivered, and supported the organization in making hundreds of pillowcases for thousands of children.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, John and Martha Carter. She is survived by many loving family members including her daughter Rebecca Claire Youmans, grandson Jaden Youmans, siblings Chip (Donna) Carter, Hugo (Cory) Carter, Claude (Marthann) Carter, & June (David) Ullman, and nieces and nephews who will miss her adventurous spirit and love.
In lieu of flowers, we request donations be made to the organizations Mary volunteered and loved: First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales, or Ryan’s Case for Smiles, Orlando Chapter.
Her Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 4 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Wales. If you are attending, please join the family in tropical (Flamingo) attire.
