MARY ESTHER METHENY

Devout Christian, Educator, and Mother

Mary Esther Metheny, 94, passed away December 6, 2022, at her residence in Pocola, Oklahoma with her family at her side.

Mary was born November 22, 1928, in Sebring, Florida to John Grover and T. Alethea (Crutchfield) Johnson.  Mary was a cheerleader, athlete, and avid sports fan.

In 1947 Mary enrolled at Florida State University to earn a degree in education. While attending FSU Mary lettered in both field hockey and basketball during her tenure. Upon graduation she began her career in teaching in Chipley, Florida.

Mary married Harley Allen Metheny on March 9 th , 1952.  The two were each other’s life-long companions and friends until he proceeded her in death in 1986.

Mary’s teaching career brought her to Avon Park where she completed her 54 years as an educator. Mary taught both second grade, kindergarten, and was honored with the “Teacher of The Year” award in 2006-2007 at Sun ‘N Lake Elementary School.

Mary will be deeply missed by her daughters Teresa Gail Allen (Jake), Grand Ledge, Michigan; Annette Maxine Lauver (Chuck), Pocola, Oklahoma; her sons David Earl Metheny (Kelly), Spring Hill, Florida; and Barry Wayne Metheny (Kari), Balaton. Minnesota.  Mary was blessed to have 18 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 11, 2022 at 2:00pm at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home with family receiving friends beginning at 1:00pm.  Interment will be in Wauchula Cemetery.
