Mary Ellen (Bulander) Adams was born July 18, 1926 in Winamac, Indiana to the late Albert and Theodosia (Back) Bulander. Following high school, she studied at the Augustana Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, IL, graduating as an RN in 1948. In preparation for her move to the Mission Field, she enrolled and graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1956. In 1957, she embarked on her journey as a Missionary with SIM to Nigeria, Africa, where for 26 years she worked as a nurse, a Bible Teacher and a Dorm Parent for missionary children. In 1960, she met and married fellow SIM missionary Winston Gould Adams – from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. God blessed them with three children. Winston passed away in 1978, but Mary Ellen continued in ministry in Nigeria. She moved to Sebring to work at the SIM Retirement Village in 1987. She retired in 1991. Mary Ellen was a member and Sunday School Teacher at the First Baptist Church. In November 2018, Mary Ellen moved to Charlotte, North Carolina to be closer to family. Following a short illness, she passed away on Saturday February 16, 2019. She is survived by her children: Cynthia (Mike) Carlin, Doug Adams, and Brenda (Scott) Sheppard, seven grandchildren: Karl (Brooke) Adams, Kevin Adams, Kyle Adams; Robert (Kris) Sheppard, Heather, Stephen (Breana) Sheppard and Ruth Ellen and three great grand-daughters: Kayla, Adalyn and Oakley. She has two nephews: Wayne (Mary & Kaylyn) and Keith Bulander and three nieces: Carmella Fowkes, Priscilla, and Quinsetta Forde – parents Fred and Sylvia Fowkes of South Africa. A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 10:00am at the SIM Chapel, 900 Andes Drive, Sebring Florida. In lieu of flowers, Mary Ellen requested Memorial Contributions be made to the Egbe Hospital Benevolent Fund Project 96210 (Mary Ellen’s first missionary assignment with SIM).
