Dr. Luis Miguel Peña, beloved husband and father, passed away at 85 years of age on Saturday, March 2, 2024. He was born in Cartagena, Colombia to Mr. and Mrs. Luis Miguel Peña. He journeyed to Spain for college and graduated from the Universidad de Zaragoza Facultad de Medicina in 1968. He pursued his internship at Lakewood Hospital in Lakewood, Ohio and then completed his residency of Internal Medicine at Touro Infirmary and Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Peña was affiliated with Walker Memorial Hospital (Florida Hospital, now Advent Health Hospital) and Highlands Regional Hospital for 29 years. He specialized in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine. He had his own practice for 29 years, administered care at Sunroom Health Services for nine years, and served at Samaritan’s Touch Care Center for thirteen years until he fully retired in 2018. His leadership roles included serving as Chief of Staff, President of the Medical Executive Committee, and Secretary and Treasurer of the Medical Executive Committee at Walker Memorial/Florida Hospital. Luis also contributed to Highlands Regional Hospital as Chief of Medicine, Chief of Staff, and the Director of the Hospital Board of Trustees. He was president of the Highlands County Medical Society and worked as Medical Director in both Sunroom Health Service and Samaritan’s Touch Care Center.
In addition to his hardworking nature, Luis had an adventurous spirit and loved traveling across the world. His other passions included tennis, which he still played regularly, golf, cycling, and politics. He was a faithful member of St. Catherine Catholic Church for 47 years. Luis will always be remembered for his playful personality, infectious laughter, strong work ethic, and caring devotion to his family, friends, and patients.
He is survived by his wife, Carmen Peña, his three children, Miguel (Wendi), Marta (Chris), and Isabel (Thomas), his eight grandchildren, and three siblings.
There will be a viewing at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home to honor Dr. Peña on Friday, March 15 from 4:00-6:00.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
