Lester A Roberts

Lester A. Roberts, age 84, of Avon Park, Florida, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2020.  He was born February 24, 1936 in Eagle Lake, Florida into the family of Alex and Janie Roberts.  He was a lifelong resident of Avon Park, Florida, beginning school at Hopewell.  In 1948, he and his family moved away to Las Cruces, New Mexico where he attended one year of public school before he was sent to Nashville, Tennessee where he was enrolled into The Nashville Christian Institute, a Church of Christ High School, completing school at NCI.  In 1954, Lester enrolled as a freshman at George Pepperdine University, Los Angeles, California.  Upon completing his four years of undergraduate studies, he was drafted in the U.S. Army.  After serving twenty honorable years in the United States Army as a Paratrooper which included two tours in Vietnam, Lester retired as Sergeant First Class.  He was a member of numerous social organizations including 32 Degree Mason, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, past President of the Highlands County Branch NAACP, Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of Avon Park, Board of Directors for the Agricultural and Labor Program, Inc., and has been a lifelong faithful and dedicated member of the South Carolina Church of Christ where he worshiped and served until his passing.     Survivors include his Wife – Bertha Mae Roberts of Avon Park, FL; Daughters – Cheawanda K. Harris of Avon Park, FL; Vilma N. Jordan of Washington, DC; Son – Victor C. Roberts of Avon Park, FL; Aunt – Annie Jackson of Baltimore, MD; First Cousin – Thelma Brown-Griffin of Avon Park, FL; Grandchildren – Rolando R. Roberts, Erica Roberts, Conya Roberts, Justin Roberts, Victor Roberts; 9 Great Grandchildren; and a host of Cousins.  Lester was preceded in death by his Parents and Son – Gary L. Roberts.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 2:00 PM  with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM at the Parkway Church of Christ of Sebring with Brother Herbert Sykes officiating.  Interment will follow in the Lakeside Historical Cemetery in Avon Park.
