John R. Skipper, Jr.

Lake Placid

John R. Skipper, Jr., age 68, of Lake Placid, Florida, passed away June 23, 2018 at his home.  He was born July 6, 1949 in Avon Park, Florida to John R. and Marguerite (Stewart) Skipper.  John was a 6 th generation rancher, citrus grower, and native Floridian and a lifelong resident of Highlands County.  He graduated from South Florida Junior College and received his Master’s Degree from the University of South Florida.  He taught for 38 years in special education and ag.  John was awarded the Teacher of the Year for Lake Placid High School.  He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as a Chairman of Finance, attended and taught the Upper Room Sunday School Class and also the Tuesday Men’s Breakfast Prayer Group.  He was a member of the FFA, Highlands County Historic Preservation Commission, Sebring Historical Society, the Good Ole Boys, and had been nominated twice for the Judge Kelly Champion for Children.  He also was a Highlands Hammock State Park Speaker, local historian, and enjoyed hosting the annual Miracle League get together.  John is survived by his Wife – Leesa R. Skipper; Sons – John R. Skipper, III; Leighton L. Skipper; Brother – Dr. Allen Skipper (Ginny); Aunt – Marcie Miller; Numerous Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Nephews, and Cousins.  He was preceded in death by his Parents and Brother – Van Skipper.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 11:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Juliano officiating.  Family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 AM prior to the service.  A private interment will be in Crewsville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the W. Van and John R. Skipper Scholarship Fund, c/o First United Methodist Church or the Friends of Highlands Hammock State Park.  The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to caregiver Ruth Ann Bierce and Compassionate Care employees Sharon, Reesie, Eileen and Amanda.
