John Luther Sigmund

April 11, 1948 — November 5, 2017

John Luther Sigmund, 69, passed away on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Sebring, FL.  He was born in Lock Haven, PA on April 11, 1948 to Richard and Thelma Sigmund: John was the youngest of 7 children.  John was a lifelong teacher, coach and mentor for his students and athletes. He began his career with the Newark Valley School District (NY), where he taught Health and Drivers Education and coached JV football and baseball. After 20 years, he moved to Sebring, FL and continued his career at Lake Placid High School and then at Sebring High School. He coached football, baseball and track, leading his athletes through undefeated seasons, district and state championships. He was awarded Coach of the Year.  John loved the simple things: a good cup of coffee, watching college football as an avid Penn State Fan, tinkering in the garage, hanging out on the patio and in the garage, and enjoying quiet evenings at home with his wife, Pat and dog, Skye.  John was an extraordinary man with a big heart and quick wit. There wasn’t a person he met that he didn’t share a laugh or smile. He was a passionate educator who shared life’s lessons with a strong dose of humor.  John was a loving brother, husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Pat, his three daughters, Stacy (Warren) Spaulding, Cheri (Rick Taylor) Sigmund and Lindsey ( Matt) Tomazin and four grandchildren, Kara Zukowski, Joshua Chandler, Julianna and Clara Tomazin. He is also survived by sisters, Dorothy (John) Miller, Helen (Phillip) Massey, brothers, Samuel (Nann) Sigmund and Jess (Suzanne) Sigmund. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Richard (Catherine) Sigmund, and sister, Kay (Larry) Watson.  The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Good Shepherd Hospice House for their care and support in his final days.  A private memorial will be held for family members at a later date in Lock Haven, PA. Friends who wish may remember John by making a donation to the Highlands County Humane Society or the American Diabetes Association.
