John Frederick Holtz

John Frederick Holtz, 77, of Dundee, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on April 7, 2025. Born on June 22, 1947, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, he was the beloved son of the late Fred and Halo Holtz.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, as a member of the First Infantry Division. His bravery was honored with the Purple Heart, a testament to his courage and sacrifice. After his honorable discharge, John continued a life of service with a 28-year career at the Milan Federal Corrections Institution, where he worked as a maintenance foreman. He remained devoted to his fellow servicemen through his active memberships in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and American Legion.

In 2006, John and his cherished wife, Phyllis, began spending their winters in Lake Placid, Florida, while continuing to make their home in Dundee. Together, they shared a life rich with love and adventures.

John enjoyed golfing, retrieving lost balls and the treasure hunt of yard saling. He was an active member of the Dundee Golf Club, where he shared many laughs and rounds with his fellow golfers. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.

John is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughters, Karen Mayes (Eric) of Commerce Township, MI, Sara Gregg (Scot) of Lambertville, MI, and Renae Sneed (Richard Granby) of Britton, MI; and grandchildren, Kelsey and Hayley Mayes, Betheny, Trinity, and Xander Gregg, Kaylynn Sneed, and William Granby. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, George and Steve Holtz.

John’s legacy of service, devotion, and kindness will live on in all who knew and loved him.
