John David Cotton Sr., a devoted husband, veteran, and man of deep faith, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, in Sebring, Florida. Born on September 4, 1937, in Grayson, Kentucky, he was the beloved son of the late Eales and Darcus Cotton.
John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, dedicating 21 years to military service before retiring with honor. After his military career, he continued to serve his community as a member of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department.
In 2004, John made Sebring, Florida his home, having moved from his birthplace of Grayson, Kentucky. He was an active member of the Bible Fellowship Church in Sebring, where he found fellowship and strength in his faith.
John was known for his love of music, delighting family and friends with his harmonica playing and heartfelt singing. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including reading, watching John Wayne films, and cherishing time with loved ones. Those who knew him admired his dedication, generosity, loyalty, and unwavering work ethic.
He is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Darlene Rae Cotton; his stepson, Deron R. Whan of Lake Placid, FL; and his sister, Marjorie Gose of Ohio and brother Larry Cotton and Kenneth Cotton of Kentucky. He is also remembered with love by numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Milford Cotten, his sisters Ellen Steele and Tamery.
John’s life was a testament to the virtues of service, love, and resilience. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
