Jimmy Rex Mills

Jimmy R. Mills, age 80, passed away on August 3, 2021, in Avon Park, FL. Jimmy was born in Ashford, AL on April 20, 1941 to Virgil M. Mills and Minnie Myra (Antley) Mills. He has been a resident of Avon Park since moving there with his family in 1953.

Jimmy has always had a passion for creating floral arrangements, and in 1971, his love for flowers became a reality when he opened Jimmy’s Flower Shop in the Jacaranda building. For the past 50 years, Jimmy’s Flower Shop has been a downtown Avon Park institution, serving the community for weddings, funerals, birthdays, anniversaries, and numerous other special occasions. He finally retired in 2008, and the flower shop is now owned and operated by his niece, Sacara Tyler.

When he wasn’t arranging flowers, Jimmy has enjoyed several hobbies over the years. He raised and sold birds including cockatiels, finches, and African Grey parrots. He was a birdwatcher and observed with several different groups of friends. Jimmy also loved antiques; buying, selling, and collecting over the past 60 years.

Jimmy was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Wynora Harper and Martha Oliver. He is survived by his sisters Betty Sue Albritton (Larry) and Janice Barefield (David) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home Sunday, August 8, 2021 from 2-3 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home Sunday, August 8, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.
