James Howard Winger

James H. Winger, 83, of Sebring, FL passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018. He was born on July 9, 1935 to Howard and Lucille (Beatty) Winger in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He grew up as an active member of the Apollo community playing the saxophone in his high school band and later marrying his biggest fan, Jone Margaret Steele on June 25, 1953.  They enjoyed 65 years of marriage and welcomed 5 beautiful children.  He graduated from Carnegie Tech in 1957 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in which he was recruited to assist on the development of the Atlas missile with Convair.  He then worked for Celanese Fibers before moving to NIST in 1971 for the Office of Flammable Fabrics/Center for Fire Research eventually becoming the Deputy Director.  Next, Jim received a ComSci Fellowship to work for Congressman Gregg's Office in D.C.  Upon his return to NIST, he finished his career in the Director's Office in Legislative Affairs.  Jim retired on September 30, 1997. He has been a resident of Sebring, Florida since 2016 coming from New Market, Maryland.  He attended Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church, enjoyed music, fishing, boating and going to the race track.  He also loved his family most especially the babies. Survivors include: wife; Jone Steele Winger-FL, children; Lola Coleen Swanson-MD, James Howard Winger, Jr.-MD, Mary Lucille Bennett-VA, Patricia Ann Schmidt-IA and Thomas Michael Winger-FL, sister; Leah Jane Starr-WA, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
