James S. Singletary, born September 9, 1922 in Whiteville, North Carolina, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2011 in Sebring, Florida. He lived in Whiteville for most of his early life and married Dorothy. Dorothy died after giving birth to Jimmy Singletary. James met Olive Ward and they were married and had two children Thomas (Tommy) and Boyd. As the kids entered the second grade in Greensboro, North Carolina, James and Olive decided to follow Archie Singletary (James Dad) to Avon Park, Florida. James worked for the Wells Motor Company for several years until his three kids left home and then decided to own his own business he actually owned two full service gas stations in Sebring. Finally sold the responsibility and went to work for Sprint Phone Company. Olive was already an employee of Sprint. After several years both James and Olive retired from Sprint. James was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Mae Singletary. Also, preceded in death by sons-Boyd, Jimmy and a step son, Irvin Ward. His two brothers also preceded him in death Leroy and Clifford Singletary. James left Tommy Singletary as the lone survivor of his immediate family with his wife Annie and one son Troy. His son Jimmy had family Kenneth Singletary, Teresa, Brenda, Tony and Shannon and son Boyd left wife Mary Ann and daughter Tammy and two grandchildren. He also leaves behind his good friend Bea Hilton. James was noted for jokes (he liked to see people smile) and gadgets he would make from wood with his Shopsmith. He volunteered at the Oaks Nursing home cleaning eye glasses and delivered meals to people who could not get out for one reason or another. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 18, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. (1 hour prior to service) at the Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home in Avon Park with funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Rev.
