James Lee Hulen

James Lee Hulen, 82, of Avon Park, Florida, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013, at Good Shepherd Hospice Somers House in Sebring. He was born April 23, 1931, to Henry and Flora (Brown) Hulen in Jones County, North Carolina, and had been a resident of Avon Park since 1971, coming from Wyoming. He received an Associate Degree in Accounting from South Florida Junior College and in 1974 received a Bachelor Degree from the University of Florida, Tampa Campus, in Business and Accounting. He operated J.L. Hulen Accounting and J. Lee H. Insurance Agency, Inc. from 1974 until 1989 on Main Street in Avon Park, and remained an Independent Insurance Agent at 27 Palm Circle until 2009. He was appointed as Pastor of Deliverance Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Clewiston, Florida on September 11, 1974 and remained there for 26 years, then was at Greater Love C.O.G.I.C. in Lake Placid, Florida for 12 years. He served as Executive Secretary of the Eastern Florida Jurisdiction until 2011 and Sebring District Superintendent from 1999 until his death. He was a veteran of two branches of the U.S. Military, serving in the U.S. Army from May 28, 1951 to May 25, 1961 and the U.S. Air Force from May 31, 1961 to June 30, 1971, retiring after serving a total of 20 years. During his military service he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the U.S. Air Force Combat Service Award with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters. He is survived by his wife, Arnetta G. Hulen; sons, Thomas I. (Mary) Hulen, Avon Park, Curtis R. (Mamie) Hulen, New Bern, NC and was preceded in death by son Gene K. Hulen and is survived by Gene's wife, Aida, of Fredrick, MD. Also survived by his sister, Jeane C. Hulen, Middle River, MD; aunt, Juanita Hill, Pollocksville, NC; two uncles, Robert Brown, Newark, NJ and Jonas Brown, Greensboro, NC; mother-in-law, Celestine C. Graham, Allendale, SC; sisters-in-law, Eva M. Leaks; Barbara J. Higgs; Gloria J. (Burnett) Harvey and Myrtle J. Graham, all of Allendale, SC; grandchildren, Thomas I. (Mandy) Hulen, Jr.; James L. (Ashley) Hulen, II; Alicia O. (Maurice) Warren; Loren A. Hulen and Royal A. Taylor and ten great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 19, 2013, at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home, Sebring. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Bountiful Blessings Church of God, 820 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Sebring, FL, with Superintendent Sylvester Wright, Officiating, Superintendent Rayfield Showers, Eulogist and The Right Reverend Dr. Jacob Cohen, Jurisdictional Prelate. Interment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241. Friends may contribute in memory of Superintendent Hulen to Greater Love C.O.G.I.C., P. O.
