James Robert "Bibs" Gleason

James Robert "Bibs" Gleason, age 88, died at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Sebring, Florida, on Friday August 7, 2015. Born March 13, 1927, in Negaunee, Michigan to Matthew and Eva Gleason, he graduated from Negaunee St. Paul's High School in 1945 before serving in the United States Navy. He later worked for the United States Postal Service where he rose to the position of Postal Supervisor. Gleason was one of the original members of the "Founders Day" committee, which evolved into what is now known as "Pioneer Days", a popular event held every summer in Negaunee. "Bibs" loved playing sports excelling in baseball, basketball and fast pitch softball. He later touched the lives of many children as a popular baseball coach in the Negaunee Little League. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, "Bibs" was popular among his friends while remaining active on the golf and tennis courts after retirement. Survived by his wife, Julia Gleason; stepdaughter Janet Kohler of Sebring, Florida; daughter Shirlie Ghiardi and husband Jim of Michigamme, Michigan; son Scott Gleason and wife Anne of Owensboro, Kentucky; son Mike Gleason and wife Lynn of Waxhaw, North Carolina; son Ross Gleason and wife Amy of Muskegon, Michigan; son-in-law David Rice of Negaunee, Michigan; sister Eva Gulas of Seattle Washington; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. "Bibs" was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Christine Rice, as well as four brothers and four sisters. "Bibs" lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed, but the world is a better place from having him here for 88 years.
