Howard J. Lewis (1933-2026)

Howard J. Lewis, 92, of Sebring, Florida, passed away in Sebring on March 14, 2026. Howard was born in Boone County, Missouri on October 28, 1933 to Willard Franklin Lewis and Alta Mae Phillips. As the youngest of 9 children, Howard was preceded in death by his father and mother, and 8 siblings (Willard Clay Lewis, Opal Butts, James Raymond Lewis, Helen McCoy, Mary George, Aubrey Lewis, Lester Lewis, Betty Jo Ball). He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley G. Skaggs, and three children, Lori G. Molloy (John), Howard Christopher Lewis (Donna), Sharon K. Pyper (Andrew), 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren.

Howard grew up in Centralia, Missouri, and obtained education degrees from Westminster College (AA, Phi Delta Theta), University of Missouri (BA), University of Michigan (MA), Wayne State University (EdS). Howard was drafted and served his country in the United States Army from 1956-1958.

Howard Lewis was an educator in L’anse Creuse Public Schools in Michigan, and served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and administrator. He belonged to and was an elder at Bethany Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Detroit, Michigan and First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Sebring, Florida. Howard enjoyed family, traveling and golf.

The Celebration of Life for Howard J. Lewis is Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 2:00pm, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 510 Poinsettia Avenue, Sebring, Florida 33870. The church will Live Stream the service on Facebook and YouTube: FCC Sebring.
