In Loving Memory of Herman Brown, Jr.
Herman Brown, Jr., 67, of Sebring, Florida, passed away on December 28, 2024 after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. Born on July 11, 1957, in Trenton, New Jersey, Herman was the cherished son of Mary Emma Brown and the late Herman Brown Sr. He was preceded in death by his father, two sisters, Barbara Hoagland and Linda Brown; his brother, Russell Brown; and his beloved granddaughter, Naomi Lee Brown.
A proud graduate of Trenton Central High School, Herman dedicated 20 years of his life to serving his country in the United States Army. From 1975 to 1995, he rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC) and served as a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Non-Commissioned Officer (NBCNCO). His distinguished military career earned him numerous honors, including two Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, and many others reflecting his outstanding leadership and commitment.
After retiring from the military, Herman continued his life of service with the Department of Corrections. Beginning in 1996, he worked at State Correctional Institution (SCI) Greene in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, fulfilling roles as a Correctional Officer and Administrative Lobby Officer. He also proudly served as a member of the SCI Greene Honor Guard. Herman retired in 2016 after 20 years of dedicated work, concluding a remarkable 40-year career of public service.
On July 9, 1990, Herman married the love of his life, Jo (Mapstone) Brown. Together, they built a life filled with joy, partnership, and shared adventures, often traveling to Herman’s favorite destination, Las Vegas. Jo lovingly recalls him as her rock, her best friend, and her world.
Herman’s passions were as diverse as they were profound. A lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, he cheered his team with pride, declaring “Fly Eagles, Fly” as his motto. A martial arts enthusiast, he earned a black belt in Tang Soo Do, a testament to his discipline and perseverance. Those who knew him will forever remember his vibrant spirit, boundless energy, and unwavering dedication to the things he loved most.
Herman is survived by his devoted wife, Jo; his loving children, Herman Brown III (Sharita) and Tammy Lee Brown; and his cherished grandchildren, Bryson, Layla, Breana, and Nylah. He also leaves behind his mother, Mary Emma Brown; brother, Terry Brown; sister, Beverly Harrison; and a large extended family, including brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Herman’s life will take place on January 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, located at 4001 Sebring Parkway, Sebring, Florida. Family and friends are welcome to gather for visitation at 12:00 PM, prior to the service.
Herman Brown, Jr. will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, unyielding love, and the remarkable legacy he leaves behind. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
