Obituary

July 1, 1936 — May 12, 2026

Dr. Hal A. White, MD, of Sebring, Florida, was welcomed to his eternal home by his Savior, Jesus, on Tuesday morning, May 12, 2026, at the age of 89. He was born to Harold and Helen White in Bridgman, Michigan, on July 1, 1936.

Hal grew up in Bridgman with his brothers, Maynard and David. A gifted student and musician, he played alto saxophone, sang in the choir at the local Congregational Church, and graduated as valedictorian of the Bridgman High School Class of 1954. Hal came to faith in Christ at his church, where missionary stories helped cultivate his calling to missionary service.

After high school, Hal attended Moody Bible Institute to prepare for missions. He later enrolled in the pre-med program at the University of Michigan, where he joined InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and met Connie Brigham, a nursing student who also planned to serve in Africa. They married in 1959, beginning nearly 67 years of marriage and a shared life of family and ministry.

Hal graduated from medical school in 1964 and continued training in pediatrics and public health. In 1968, Hal and Connie moved with their young family to Jos, Nigeria, where Hal served as principal of the SIM Medical Auxiliary Training School. During the Lassa Fever outbreak in 1970, he became director of Evangel Hospital and worked with a team from the United States Centers for Disease Control as they studied the virus.

After returning to Michigan, Hal served for many years as medical director of a Health Maintenance Organization. In 2005, he retired with Connie to the SIM Retirement Village in Sebring, Florida. They later became active at Covenant Presbyterian Church, where Hal sang in the choir.

Hal is survived by his beloved wife, Constance Jean White; his children, Steven White (Leanne), James White (Robin), Elizabeth Simon (Robert), Mary Anne Bernsee (Scott), and Deborah Frazer (Norm); 11 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Richard White; and his brothers, Maynard White and David White.

Hal will be remembered as a faithful follower of Jesus, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, missionary, minister, mentor, and friend. He gave his intellect to medicine, his voice to worship, and his heart to the Lord. One of his most endearing qualities was his radiant smile.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, June 14, at 3:30 PM at SIM Village Chapel, 900 Andes Drive, Sebring, Florida.
