Gordon Louis Vertz died on February 26, 2018 in Avon Park, Florida, at the age of 76, after a brief hospital stay. Gordon is survived by his sons, Paul (Lori) and Brian; his grandchildren Korben and Kamryn; his siblings Wallace “Sherwood”, Robert “Butch” and Bernadette; his former wives Susan and Lisa; and his friends. He was preceded in death by his father Leroy and mother Mittie and siblings Patricia and Earnest “Mike”.
In his youth, Gordon played baseball, football and hockey in his native Manistique, in the upper peninsula of Michigan. He graduated from high school in 1959 and entered the U.S. Army in March 1962. Gordon completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood and the Airborne training course at Ft. Bennington, after which he was deployed with the 8th Infantry in Wackernheim, Germany. In 1964, after his honorable discharge, he started a family in southeast Michigan, where he resided until his retirement from the construction industry. Gordon spent his retirement in central Florida, where he enjoyed visiting friends at the VFW and Moose lodge. He enjoyed fishing and vintage cars. No funeral services are planned at this time. The family is grateful for the condolences but declines flowers and donations.
