Fredrick (Fred) Matthew Nugent, went home to his creator on May 24, 2016, at the Good Shepherd Hospice. He was born on December 13, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan. He was preceded in death by parents Leo and Gertrude Tallman Nugent; brother Harold H. Nugent; and son Michael Patrick Nugent. Fred married Judy Krofft Nugent December 2, 1961, in Port Clinton, Ohio. Their children are Bobbie Nugent (John) Clark, Lorie Nugent (Darrell) Layfield, Michael Patrick Nugent, and Carrie Nugent (Joseph) Colangelo of Sebring, FL. Their grandchildren are Matthew V. (Melissa) Clark, Tampa, FL; Emory Layfield, Orlando, FL; Joseph A. Colangelo, Orlando, FL; and Olivia Colangelo, Sebring, FL; as well as many nieces and nephews. Fred graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1957. He attended Bowling Green State University and soon worked for the Northern Ohio Telephone Company in Port Clinton, OH. The family moved to Sebring, FL, in 1968, where Fred joined United Telephone Company as manager of the Sebring office. He retired from the telephone company after 25 years and opened The Lunch Box Restaurant in downtown Sebring, following which he drove tour buses for Annett Bus Lines. He enjoyed driving the kindergarten kids to and from school for the Kindergarten Learning Center before retiring. He enjoyed his opportunity to travel and often took the family to places he had visited while driving the bus. Fred was very active in the community. He was a charter member of the Downtown Breakfast Kiwanis Club in which he served as first president. He became lieutenant governor for Kiwanis and was instrumental in promoting many projects for the welfare of children. Fred was very involved in his church, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, serving on the Parish Council, the Social Ministry, and as a lector. He was instrumental in the construction of the playground as well as many annual social functions of the parish. He was a 40 year 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Life with Fred was always an adventure. He often took the grandkids on 'grand adventures,' and he and Judy enjoyed trips to all but 9 of the 50 states as well as abroad. They also traveled to Ireland to find his family's origins. He was a 'foodie' before the term existed. He loved to cook - especially for a crowd, above all for a church or community project. He was a huge fan of the Tampa Bay Rays. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 1, 2016, 5:00-7:00pm, at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home in Sebring. A Funeral Mass and luncheon will be Thursday, June 2, 2016, 11:00am at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with Father Nicholas McLoughlin officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in Fred's memory to the Our Lady of Grace 'James Conroy JR Scholarship Fund' 595 E. Main Street, Avon Park, FL 33825.
