Frank Brome Lown, Jr.

Frank B. Lown, Jr., passed away Sunday, October 7, 2012, in Sebring, Florida. He was born in Poughkeepsie, New York on May 3, 1919, and was a resident of Pearl River, N.Y. for 31 years before coming to Sebring in 1991. He graduated from George Washington High School in 1937 and was drafted in April, 1941. After completing Basic Training at Ft. Riley, Kansas In-House Cavalry he was sent to General Headquarters, U.S. Army at the Army War College Building in Washington, D.C. He served as a Technical Sergeant in the Office of the Commanding General, Lt. General Leslie J. McNair. In September, 1942, he went to the Air Force Officer Candidate School at Miami Beach, FL, graduating in January, 1942 as a Second Lieutenant. He then was sent to the 23rd Air Service Group, 11th Air Force at Aoak in the Aleutian Islands. He served as an Air Transport Officer and also commanded the first Air Land Rescue Squad composed by Native American Troops. Returning to the States in December, 1944, he was sent to Kelly Field in San Antonio, Texas. He served as a Special Service Officer, Base Statistical Officer and O.D. After the war ended, he attended C.C.N.Y. under the G.I. Bill. He graduated in 1951 with a B.S. Degree with majors in Civil Engineering and Geology. He was employed for 30 years as a Civil Engineering Design Draftsman for several companies in the New York area, including Malcolm Pierce, Environmental Engineers, Cerro Mining Co., The Parco Co., The American Lungi Corporation and Welskopf and Pickworth, Consulting Engineers. After retiring, Frank kept busy. He was a member of the Appalachian Trail Conference in the Harriman State Park area. He was also a member of the Harry Ingraham Mining Syndicate in Canada, the Founders of the Milliken Lake Uranium Mine at Elliot Lake. He was also a member of Post 25, American Legion at Lake Placid, FL and he loved to fish and go hiking. He is survived by his daughter, Katherine A. Lown of New Jersey and sons, Richard D. Lown of Sebring and Thomas S. Lown of Ossining, N.Y. A Memorial Service, with Military Honors, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, Sebring, FL, with W. Mike Adams officiating.
