On August 26, 2022, Elizabeth (Betty) May Lasher passed from this earthly life into the presence of God. She was born on June 18, 1930, daughter of Frank and Etta Lasher, in Portland, OR. Betty was predeceased by her twin sister, Margaret, as well as her younger sister, Barbara, and younger brother, Robert.
After graduating from high school in 1948, Betty enrolled as a student at Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1952. For the next five years, Betty worked as a high school teacher in Oregon while she continued graduate studies at Oregon State, eventually earning a Master of Education in 1958.
During the summer of 1955, while working on her Master’s degree, Betty crossed paths with a former class-mate whose life had been changed dramatically. Through the renewal of this relationship, Betty put her trust in Jesus Christ as her Savior, and experienced a joy and peace that she had never known before.
In 1958, Betty began three years of study at Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, OR. Upon graduation, in 1961, Betty served several different Christian ministries prior to applying for overseas ministry with SIM in 1966. In 1967, Betty arrived in Nigeria, where she would spend most of the next thirty years teaching the Bible, as well as other subjects to young Nigerian men and women. She was much loved for the care and concern that she demonstrated to her students.
She retired to Carlsbad, CA, in 1997. Ten years later, Betty relocated to Sebring, FL, where she lived in the SIM Retirement Village and joined Southside Baptist Church.
A service to remember Betty’s life will be held at 3:00 PM, on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at the SIM Chapel located at 900 Andes Dr., Sebring, FL. Memorial gifts may be directed to the SIM Retirement Village, 4114 Nigeria St., Sebring, FL 33875.
