Elizabeth "Betty" Johnston Scott, age 79, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Sebring, Florida.
Betty was born on June 6, 1946, in Wheeling, West Virginia, to the late Mary C. and Robert F. Johnston. She grew up in Bellaire, Ohio, graduating from Bellaire High School in 1964. She went on to a degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, in 1968.
In 1972, after working with the Girl Scout Leaders of America in Michigan, Betty moved to Florida, where She laid down deep roots in Avon Park, built her a home, and raised her family.
Betty was a woman of immense artistic talent. Her love for art, painting, flowers, and fabric and paper crafts shaped both her life and career. In the 1980s, she shared her passion for creating by opening a sewing studio in the historic Brickell Building. Her sharp eye for design also shone through during her years working as a local florist. Betty was a dedicated, long-time member of the Avon Park Founders Garden Club, proudly serving as its president for several years.
Music was another great joy in Betty's life. She loved singing in the choir at the Union Congregational Church and spent decades as a devoted member of the Heart of Highlands Sweet Adelines Chorus. With the chorus, she combined her love of performance and design, spending countless hours both performing and sewing beautiful costumes for their shows.
Betty believed deeply in giving back. She volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and was incredibly proud to participate in Avon Park’s very first All-Women Build. She also helped with the annual church Thanksgiving dinner and supported the Hands for Homeless outreach initiative. As an advocate for others, she was highly active with the Narcolepsy Network, serving on its Board and notably organizing and leading their Annual convention as Conference Chair in Las Vegas in 2011.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary C. and Robert F. Johnston, and her brother, Phillip C. Johnston.
Betty is survived by her loving children: her daughter, Ruth E. Scott of Avon Park, and her son, Wayne Scott, grandchildren: David, Dale and Brailey of Frostproof. She is also survived by her sister, Peggy Johnston de Albertos (Fernando), and niece, Isabel Albertos Johnston, all of Segovia, Spain; her sister-in-law, Betty Johnston; and her brother Phillip's children: Maura Fischer (Brad) and family of Columbus, Ohio, Neil Johnston (Kelly) and family of Dublin, Ohio, and Kirk Johnston (Melanie) and family of Oro Valley, Arizona, as well as numerus beloved Scott Family nieces and nephews.
Betty’s warmth, creativity, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by her family, friends, church community, and the countless individuals whose lives she touched through her decades of service.
A Celebration of Life will be held on June 7th at 3:00 PM at the Union Congregational UCC (The Millennium Church) 106 N Butler Ave. in Avon Park, FL.
