Edward Beryll Vaughn Carter, 101, husband of Pearl Weiss Carter, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 7, 2017 at home. Born September 25, 1916 in New York, he lived most of his adult life on Long Island before moving to Lake Placid, FL 35 years ago. He was very active in the Highlands County area belonging to the National Audobon Society, the Kissimmee Valley Archeological Group, The Rock and Gem Club, Highlands Little Theatre and HLT Gladhatters. Ed was a true Renaissance man with varied occupations and talents. He had worked for both Grumman and Republic Aerospace; owned Timely , an antique and clock shop; he was an award-winning wood craftsman and a published photographer in the National Geographic and Encyclopedia Americana. He had a zest for life and believed that exercise of mind and body were the cornerstone to well-being and longevity. He danced, rode a bicycle, went to the gym, sang, skied, walked, and read the Wall Street Journal daily well into his mid-90’s. Ed is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Pearl; daughters, Beryll Hansen (Gerald) and Vaughn Carter; step-son, Matthew Kaphan; Four grandchildren, Gary Hansen (Patricia); Karen Huang (Robert); Lorraine Holt; James McIntee; Four great-grandchildren, Michael Hansen, Ryan McGuinness, Gabriel Huang, Emi Huang; and two great-great-grandsons, Brandon and Jacob Hansen. He was preceded in death by step-son, Stephen Kaphan. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Temple Israel, Sebring where Edward and his wife were members.
