Edmund “Ed” James Fischer, age 82, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025 in Sarasota, Florida. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 18, 1942 to the late Frederick and Teresa (Scafuri) Fischer. Ed had been a resident since 1995 coming from Michigan and was a veteran serving in the US Navy during Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW Post 4300, Amvets, VVA and 9853 DAV Chapter 49. Ed worked for the government in housing. In his free time, he loved to play cards and shuffleboard in addition to deep sea fishing and cruising. Ed was a life member of disabled American Veterans since 1973 Ridge chapter 49; life member of VFW since 1996, past Commander post 4300, member 9853; a Member of VVA chapter 1097; Past Veteran of the Year, Veterans Council Highlands County; Commander of DAV when the first van for Veteran transport to Bay Pines was delivered to the chapter. He actually drove to Michigan and picked up the first van with another member. Ed worked with incarcerated veterans for many years as a consultant assisting positive adjustment back into their communities. Ed is survived by his Children – AnnMarie, Freddy, and Rich; Siblings – David Fischer and Terry Mayvill; Sisters-in-law – MaryAnn, Angie, and Linda as well as many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his Brothers – Rich, Ken, and Fred. A Memorial service will be held Friday, September 5th at 10:00am at Stephenson-Nelson Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow at Sarasota National Cemetery at 2:00pm.
