Maureen Ann McKenna (1953-2026)
Dr. Maureen A. McKenna, 73, of Sebring, FL found her eternal rest on August 28, 2026. She was born on June 17, 1953 in New Kensington, PA to James McKenna and Antionette Petrone McKenna. She earned her Masters degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh and later a PhD in Counseling & Personnel Services from the University of Maryland. Dr. McKenna excelled in her field and received many recognitions and commendations during her career and retired from Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, DC,
Dr. McKenna served as the President of the Democratic Women’s Club of Florida from 2013-2017. She was a staunch advocate of democracy and equal rights for all and will be remembered for her leadership, as well as her friendship and encouragement of future leaders. One of her proudest moments was attending the 2016 Democratic National Convention as a delegate from the State of Florida.
Dr. McKenna was preceded in death by both parents and her son, Hyatt Mays. She is survived by her brother Barry McKenna, nieces Melissa McKenna (Mykal) and Kristen Manaresi (Evan), nephews Jason McKenna (Jess) and Matthew McKenna (Erica), aunt Rona McKenna, as well as her many loving cousins with whom she was very close.
A small family gathering will be held at her burial site this fall in Pennsylvania. The family suggests that donations can be made in her memory to the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, FL, the Democratic Women’s Club of Florida, or Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, FL.
