Douglas Benjamin Shaffer passed away in Sebring, FL on July 20, 2024, at the age of 83. He was born on December 23, 1940, in Preble, NY to the late Arthur and Lillie Shaffer. A resident of Sebring since 2014, Douglas moved there from Hartsville, SC.

Douglas served his country honorably in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1969. He dedicated his career to the nuclear power industry first as a Plant Operator, then as a Senior Reactor Operator. After his years as a top-level Nuclear Power Instructor, he retired and served as a consultant to various nuclear plants across the country. His commitment to his profession was matched by his devotion to his community and family. He was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Lake Placid and a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Gillian E. Shaffer; his daughters Deborah Clark of Dothan, AL, and Dawn M. Comer (Ben) of Stuart, FL; his sister Dianne Nalin (Carlo) of Princeton, NJ; his grandchildren Josh VanBuhler, Haley Robinson (Jordy), Amber VanBuhler, Aubrey Wells (Michael), and Luciano Conte; and great-grandchildren Brody, Blakely, and Leighton.. He was a loving and supportive father and grandfather, providing stability and love to his family.

In his community, Douglas was known for his enthusiasm and active participation in the Social Committee at Buttonwood Bay. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, boating, dancing, and traveling. His vibrant spirit and warm heart touched many lives, leaving a lasting legacy of joy and dedication.

Douglas will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His life was a testament to the values of love, service, and community.

May he rest in peace.
