Douglas A. Gale, aged 74, of Sebring, Florida passed away peacefully on September 14th, 2024 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Sebring. Doug was the youngest of three children, born June 2nd,1950 in Beloit, Wisconsin to Lee and Hazel Gale.
Doug is survived by his loving wife Gail of 51 years, son Brian, daughter-in-law Jamie, grandchildren Rolf and Ruth, and sister Rose Ann (Gale) Schroder. He is preceded in death by his sister Patricia (Gale) Weissinger.
“Dougbert”, as he was called by his son and grandchildren, was an avid fisherman that frequented the outdoors on many lakes in Northern Minnesota and Canada. His favorite adventures were remote location fishing trips into Canada that required either a several hour drive in followed by a portage to access a secluded lake, or a fly-in endeavor to a lake only accessible by air and landing on the water. In addition, Doug fished several lakes in Florida and at one time landed a catch and release world record Largemouth Bass. Doug was a dedicated flag football and baseball coach during his son’s youth as well as a dedicated supporter and spectator of his son’s bicycle racing, attending most of his races. Doug was an avid reader and Civil War history buff, visiting numerous battlefields and historical sites over the years while locating the burial sites of distant relatives that fought in the war. In his free time during retirement, he liked to play pool at the Tanglewood Activity Center.
Doug attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and spent the majority of his career in the steel supply service industry, working his way from the warehouse through various positions until retiring from his position as Quality Manager in 2014. Doug and Gail then relocated to Florida to enjoy the good life. Doug will be missed and remembered by all for his tenacious work ethic, dry sense of humor, level-headed approach to challenges, and bringing a “dose of reality” to any tough situation.
A Celebration of Life for Doug will be held at a future date. Doug and Gail have had several dogs over the years and were devoted to their pets. As such, in lieu of flowers, a donation is requested to the Humane Society of Highlands County in Sebring, FL.
