Dorothy Kalloch

May 31, 1927 — September 7, 2019

Sebring

Dorothy Kalloch was born on May 31, 1927 to Dudley and Marjorie (Overman) Kalloch.  In the next few years, Dorothy would be joined by two younger sisters, Marjorie and Beatrice.  Dorothy was born in Leninakan, Russia – currently known as Gyumri, Armenia.  Her father, a medical doctor, was working with the refugees from the conflict between Turkey and Armenia.  While her father was from New York and her mother was from Georgia, when the family returned to the United States, they made their home in Santa Monica, California where Dorothy graduated from University High School in West Los Angeles in June 1944.  Dorothy wrote, “I was about seven years of age when I accepted Christ as my Savior.”  She also noted that from an early time she desired to serve the Lord as a nurse and a missionary.  During her high school years, her faith was strengthened by participation with a church youth group that really emphasized growth in grace and sharing one’s faith with others.

Following high school, Dorothy went to college intermittently and worked at a couple of different jobs.  She wrote, “I’m ashamed to say that I failed to seek the Lord’s guidance after high school and became discontented and undecided as to my life’s work.  I went to UCLA and did some office work for a while before the Lord drew me near enough to Himself to show me that He did want me to be a nurse.”  With this renewed vision, Dorothy enrolled in the University Of California School Of Nursing, graduating with a BSN in 1954. She then attended BIOLA earning a diploma in the two year course in August of 1955. During her time as a student at BIOLA, she also worked on staff in their Medical Department.  Dorothy applied to SIM in the summer of 1955 and was appointed for missionary service to French West Africa on November 15, 1955.

May of 1956 found Dorothy studying French in Paris; and in February 1957, she arrived in the Niger Republic.  For the next 15 years, Dorothy used her medical experience and training to minister in several different locations across Niger, including Galmi, Guescheme, Danja, and Tsibiri.  During a furlough in the early 70s, Dorothy attended the Summer Institute of Linguistics in preparation for translation work.  Beginning in 1974, she spent the next 12 years at Mainé-Soroa working in Manga translation and evangelism. Dorothy was known as an excellent Hausa speaker, and also served as a Hausa teacher.

Dorothy officially retired on May 1, 1994 after 38 years of service with SIM, however, that didn’t stop her from making 4 more extended trips to Niger, serving as a ROYALL between 1998 and 2007, celebrating her 80 th birthday at Galmi.  Dorothy left Niger for the last time in late summer of 2007, returning to California for a brief time before settling here in Sebring, Florida.  Dorothy was an intelligent, gracious lady with a beautiful smile who loved her Lord and loved her “neighbor”.  On September 7 th , 2019, at the age of 92, Dorothy Kalloch slipped peacefully into the presence of her Savior.
