Carrie Irene Fox was born on December 8, 1923 to Edgar and Rena (Stickney) Fox. Carrie had two older brothers, Wendell and Durward, and later, a younger brother James. Carrie grew up on a small nine-acre farm in Athens, Maine. She graduated from Somerset Academy in 1941 and went to Farmington State Normal School that fall to begin a three-year teacher training program. In 1944, Carrie began a teaching career in central Maine, that would continue for the next 20 years. She taught in Norridgewock, Bingham, Cumberland Center, Athens, and Moscow. Along the way she continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1956 from the Farmington State College.
In 1949, encouraged through the ministry of Dr. Charles Long and his wife, Carrie put her faith and trust in Jesus Christ as her Savior. From that time forward, she spent time studying the Bible – both formally and informally – and taught and counseled in Daily Vacation Bible Schools and Summer Camps throughout central Maine.
In the early 60s, she met an SIM missionary from Nigeria who encouraged her to consider serving as a teacher in Nigeria. After much prayer, with many reservations, she sent off a letter to SIM…hoping that would be the end of it. However, upon receiving a personal letter in response, she began to soften to the idea of going to Nigeria in her 40s. She saw God’s great faithfulness in removing all the roadblocks that she thought might prevent her from this opportunity. In December 1966, she was on her way to Nigeria. For the next 21 years, she mostly taught 5 th grade at Kent Academy in Miango, Nigeria; however, the last 4 years she was the librarian and helped with special needs.
Carrie retired from service in Nigeria in 1987 and moved to Sebring in 1989. She was a member of the Alliance Church of Sebring and helped with various ministries over the years. In 1998, Carrie made a trip back to Nigeria for a short-term of service as a ROYALL with SIM.
On April 30, 2019, at the age of 95, Carrie Fox entered the presence of her Lord and Savior. Carrie is survived by her younger brother James as well as several nieces and nephews.
