Carolyn Jean May

Carolyn Jean (Gibbs) May was 91 when she passed Saturday night at Adventhealth in Sebring, Florida. She was formerly from Quincy, Michigan. Carolyn the daughter of Dr. Carol W. and Leatha H. (Bigelow) Gibbs was born in Petoskey, Michigan. She was raised in Battle Creek, Michigan along with her brothers Wyland and Daryl Gibbs. She was a 1946 graduate of Central High School and went to Western Michigan University for two years. Carolyn married Francis M. Reemtsen (Bud) in 1946. They had two daughters Kay and Becky. Their marriage ended in divorce. In 1952 she married Duane B. May. He adopted Kay and Becky and together they had a son Bruce. Carolyn worked as a secretary in her dad’s dental office. Later as a secretary at Minges Brook Schools and Kellogg’s. In 1960 Carolyn and Duane purchased May Hardware in Bellevue Michigan. After 19 years of living and working in Bellevue they sold and semi-retired on Marble Lake in Quincy, Michigan. They worked part-time at Nelson Hardware in Portage, Michigan, and wintered in Sebring, Florida. They eventually sold the lake house and lived full time in Sebring. Carolyn loved golf and bowling. Her favorite was dancing in Buttonwood Bay with all her friends on Saturday nights and bridge during the week. Carolyn was a very talented china painter. She had a large collection of dolls she made and painted along with dishes. She won several blue ribbons for her work. Carolyn is survived by her husband Duane of 67 years. Her brothers Dr. Wyland (Julia) Gibbs of Grand Rapids , Michigan. Daryl (Lulu) Gibbs of Sebring, Florida. Daughter’s Kay (Harold) Norton of Sebring, Florida and Becky Gannon of Mascot, Tennessee. Also surviving is a niece, nephew, several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Bruce May, nephew Kurt Gibbs, granddaughter Denise Cheseldine and sister in law JoAnn Gibbs.  We will all miss her smile and love her dearly. She is happy now, she’s home with the Lord. At Carolyn’s request, due to COVID-19, there will not be a Celebration of Life. Condolences may be sent to:
