Lake Placid

Rev. Bobby “Bob” Edward DeWitt, 88, passed away on December 19, 2024, in Sebring, FL. Born on May 13, 1936, in Conway, SC, he was the son of the late Hobson and Ila DeWitt.

Bob is survived by his children, Stephen DeWitt of Washington, DC; Andrew DeWitt of Portland, OR; and Karen Jowers of Lake Placid, FL; as well as his grandson, Luke Fulp of Lehigh Acres, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean DeWitt, and his son-in-law, Gary Jowers.

Bob’s life was defined by his deep faith and unwavering dedication to serving others. In 1969, he moved to Lake Placid, FL, where he led the First Presbyterian Church until 1986. His pastoral service also included Shiloh ARP in Lancaster, SC; First ARP in Statesville, NC; and Calvin Presbyterian in Norfolk, VA. He was a respected leader in his community, serving as past president of both the Lake Placid and Statesville ministerial associations. Later in life, he returned to Lake Placid and First Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir and continued to enjoy supplying the pulpit as a substitute.

Beyond the pulpit, Bob was a devoted community leader throughout his life. He previously chaired the Lake Placid Public Library Board of Trustees and served on the board of Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center, now AdventHealth Lake Placid. He was a current board member of the Friends of the Library. He was always concerned about people being fed and was instrumental in starting a food bank at Calvin Presbyterian.

A gifted watercolor painter, Bob had a deep appreciation for art, classic films, and musicals from the 1930s–1950s. He found joy in life’s details, from decorating to celebrating beauty in all its forms.

Rev. Bob DeWitt will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all touched by his kindness, creativity, and faith.
