BLANCA IRIS MARTÍNEZ ROMERO

(Blanca Martínez de Ruiz)

Blanca Martínez de Ruiz was a daughter, sister, wife, friend, and companion, but to us she was and will forever remain our mother.

She was born on March 8, 1940, in the town of Lares, Puerto Rico. Her parents, Ángela Romero and Ramón Martínez, joyfully welcomed their fourth daughter. Blanca had four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her younger siblings, Aníbal Martínez and Ruth Morrison.

Our mother grew up on the farms of Río Prieto, surrounded by fruit trees, plantain and banana fields, coffee crops, rivers, and waterfalls, wrapped in the beautiful green of the Puerto Rican countryside. From a young age she was hardworking and always helped her parents with the household chores. She drew water from the well, washed clothes in the river, and learned to cook over a wood fire. She loved to learn and would walk long distances barefoot, crossing streams and paths, just to go to school. She did not have a childhood like other children: she never had a doll, and play was not part of her life. She grew up with many responsibilities, helping at home and caring for her younger siblings. She was always a devoted daughter; she deeply loved her mother, and her mission was to care for and protect her. As a teenager she had to leave home to work in the city caring for children. She felt very sad and lonely far from her family.

At the age of eighteen she met the man who would become her husband, Juan Ruiz Soto. They were married on October 4, 1958. Their union lasted 52 years, until he passed away in October 2010. From that marriage five children were born: Maribel Ruiz, Ruth López, Blanca Trujillo, and the twins Juan Luis and Juan Alberto Ruiz. The family continued to grow: Blanca had ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Our mother was an exceptional woman, deeply devoted to her home. She cooked deliciously; everything she prepared was flavorful, healthy, quick, and exquisite. There is no food like Mom’s. In addition to being excellent in the kitchen, she was very talented with her hands. She made many crafts for the home—curtains, cushions, pictures—and arranged flowers with great beauty. In short, she decorated the house with much love and care. She was good with her finances; she always had money saved and knew how to make it last. For many years she sewed our clothes. She was clean, hardworking, and full of virtues.

The greatest of all her virtues was her love for Jesus. She taught us to love Jesus. She gathered us every morning and every evening for family worship. Every Friday the house filled with the delicious aroma of the bread she prepared so we could celebrate the Sabbath. On Saturdays she prepared special meals so the family could enjoy time in nature. She always made the Sabbath a very special day.

Our mother not only possessed many virtues; she was also always a very beautiful woman. She cared for her diet, exercised, used natural remedies, and stayed active and full of energy. She loved plants, flowers, and growing her own food. She loved life and lived it with energy and intensity. For her the words “I can’t” did not exist; she always found a solution. She was courageous and feared nothing. She was our example and our joy. She was a great support to each of her children through the different circumstances of life. Her support came not only through her advice, but also through her prayers. She was a warrior in prayer. Her prayers always accompanied us and protected us.

Blanca is survived by her loving family; sons, Juan Ruiz Martinez, and Juan L. Ruis Martinez (Maria Del Carmen); daughters, Ruth Lopez (Jose Armando), Blanca Iris Trujillo (Hernando), and Maribel Ruiz. Blanca took pride in her role of grandmother and great grandmother to her 10 beautiful grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Blanca's first granddaughter, Celimar Weaver, was considered like a daughter to her.

Our mother was the best in the world. Her love, her care, and her dedication are beyond description. She was our positive strength in this world, always with a smile on her face and a gaze filled with immense love. She was our oak tree, who overcame many storms and tempests while remaining steadfast. But like the oak, only God decides our existence. Her time of rest has come. The light in her eyes has gone out and her smile no longer lights her face; yet her love, her light, her memories, and her smile live forever in the hearts of those who loved her.

Rest in peace, Mom.

We love you forever.
