Betty Adams Coleman passed away on February 24, 2014 in Apopka, Florida. Betty was the wife of George M. (Mack) Adams, who died in December of 2002 in Sebring, Florida, and she later married Jean P. Coleman of Sebring, Florida and Bloomington, Indiana in December of 2005. Betty was born on May l, 1925 in Chilhowie, Virginia to Walter and Mayme (Gollehon) Pierce and she was married to George M. (Mack) Adams in 1949 at Berea College following the completion of her undergraduate degree at Berea College in 1948. Betty and Mack were married at the chapel on the Berea College campus when he returned from military duty in World War II. Following their marriage and some moves that allowed Mack to pursue his Master's degree in agriculture economics at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, Mack was assigned to various agricultural extension positions in and around Salem, IN. Betty then began teaching in Pierce Twp. Elementary School in Pekin, IN and later at Little York Elementary School while she pursued her Master's Degree in elementary education at Indiana University. She later became a second grade school teacher at Bradie Shrum Elementary School in Salem where she spent the rest of her 23 year teaching career. Betty was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Salem, where she taught Sunday School classes and participated in various volunteer activities. Following her teaching career in Indiana, in her retirement years Betty was honored for her 15 years of volunteer service as a teaching aid at Cracker Trail Elementary in Sebring, Florida in 2005. She loved helping children learn and develop in order to reach their full potential in life. During their retirement years, Betty and Mack permanently moved to Buttonwood Bay Retirement Community south of Sebring, Florida in 1987. She dearly loved the Buttonwood Bay community and her many friends and she belonged to the Buttonwood Bay Community Church for many years. Betty is survived by her second husband, Jean P. Coleman, of Sebring, FL and by her daughter, Teresa Kay (Hugh) Hattabaugh of Apopka, FL and her son, Larry E. (Joanie) Adams of Columbus, IN. Also surviving are grandchildren, Holly Shever of Orlando, FL and Heidi (Tim) Cardenas of Apopka, FL and Craig and Grant Adams of Columbus, IN. Great grandchildren are Kaitlyn Smith, Luke and Logan Shever and great-great granddaughter, Madison Cardenas all of the Orlando and Apopka areas. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mayme (Gollehon) Pierce, her three sisters, Maxine Hamm, Mildred Groseclose, and Pat Corvin all of Virginia and her first husband, George M. (Mack) Adams. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Buttonwood Bay Community Center at 1:00pm. A later service will be held in London, KY. Memorial contributions can be made to any organization assisting children in their educational pursuits.
