Betty Jane Burch

August 6, 1920 — March 28, 2015

Born August 6, 1920 to Earl and Mildred McLaughlin of Roulette, Pennsylvania, Betty was the eldest of four, but last survivor of her family. She stopped one semester short of her doctoral degree at the University of Minnesota, deciding she loved Les Burch more than her history studies. They were married in 1952, adding two children to their circle of love. Avon Park became home in 1967 where she challenged students in her World History classroom for 15 years and relaxed with Les on the golf course at River Greens. When he went home to be with the Lord after 31 years of marriage, retirement did not diminish her concern that all students deserve the right to be encouraged learn. She passionately supported Avon Park Community Child Development Center to ensure every child had access to quality preschool education. Betty's many hours of service over the years, both to the Center and the Women's Ministry at First Presbyterian Church, were very satisfying contributions to this community. "Mrs. Burch" couldn't go anywhere in town without running into a former student and inquiring what life had taught them. Once a teacher, always a teacher. She leaves behind daughter, Laurie Travers and husband Peter of Longwood, Fl. and four grandsons(three married); and her son, Greg, his wife Beth and two grandsons of Avon Park . Memorial service will be held this Saturday, April 4 at 1 pm at the Avon Park First Presbyterian Church, 215 E Circle St. with reception to follow. Betty's wish was that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Avon Park Community Child Development Center, 800 S. Delaney Ave., Avon Park, Fla. 33825, to continue motivating children as they begin their journey of learning.
